U-Mail accounts are provided by the University to registered graduates and undergrads with an active NetID. Students enrolled through UCSB Extension Open University will also receive accounts.
Once your NetID deactivates, your coinciding U-Mail and Google Drive are also deactivated.
Your UCSB NetID account will remain active as long as you are a registered student and for 13 months afterwards. As soon as the Registrar notes your lapsed status, your 13 month countdown begins. Should you return to campus as a student in that window, the countdown will cease.
Preparing for U-Mail Account Deactivation
Before your NetID and U-Mail account are deactivated we recommend that you do the following:
- Obtain a non-UCSB e-mail account; Gmail and Yahoo are popular options.
- Prepare your U-Mail account for deactivation using the Transfer Your Content tool within Gmail:
- Log into your Umail account.
- Click on your UC Santa Barbara account in the upper right corner.
- Click on Manage your Google Account
- Click on Start Transfer in the section entitled Transfer your content.
- If you encounter an error, try completing the above process in a private or incognito browser.
- Change the email address associated with any online accounts (i.e. Amazon, Facebook, Ebay, etc.) to your new email address.
- Inform your contacts of your new address.
- As an added safeguard, setup mail mail forwarding to move mail to your new account.
Preparing for Google Drive Deactivation
- If you own Google docs, forms, sheets, etc., content that is currently being used by individuals at UCSB, or content otherwise owned by the university, make sure to move the files to a Shared Drive.
- If you are the sole manager of a Shared Drive, promote another member to manager.
- Remove or transfer any personal information from Google Drive to a personal account or another file storage option using the Transfer Your Content tool.
- Download your Google Drive content.
UCSB NetID Account Extensions
- Students who have continuing legitimate business with the campus may be granted extensions on a case-by-case basis. The final decision will be up to the department with which you're affiliated. If you believe you qualify for an extension on your NetID account please submit a help request here.
-
- Requests must be in at least 10 business days before scheduled deactivation.
-
- Extension Open University accounts are not eligible for extensions.
