Introduction
Time limits for assignments and quizzes can be modified to accommodate specific student needs, as is the case of DSP students or other students with special circumstances. This article describes the different possibilities that Canvas offers to accommodate specific students' needs when completing assignments and quizzes.
This article addresses:
Follow these steps to modify the due dates of Assignments and Quizzes to accommodate the needs of specific students:
- Log in to Canvas and navigate to your course site.
- Create a new Assignment or Quiz or open up an existing Assignment or Quiz where you wish to modify the due dates for (a) specific student(s).
- Scroll down to Assign. To the left, you will see the default due date options for everyone in the course. Select a due date for everyone in the class. You may also edit the task’s availability dates. To learn about the difference between due dates and availability dates in Canvas, click here.
- Click +Add to include due dates for specific students.
- In the new Assign to box, type the name of the student(s) that need(s) an extension and select a new due date. You must also edit the availability dates if you wish this task to be available within specific dates for these students. The settings from everyone in the class will not override these latter ones.
- Click Save & Publish to display the content in your course or Save to save the content unpublished.
In Classic and New Quizzes, you may extend the time limit and number of attempts of a quiz to accommodate the needs of specific students. This would be important for students who might need extended time for timed quizzes or who might need additional chances to successfully complete a quiz.
In Classic Quizzes, you may extend the standard time limit and attempts for specific students. The time extension granted to a student in a specific Classic Quiz will not be applied to a future Classic Quiz, so you will have to edit the extension in every new Classic Quiz you create.
Follow these steps to extend the time limit and/or attempts in a Classic Quiz for specific students:
- Log in to Canvas and navigate to your course site.
- Open up the published Classic Quiz where you would like to grant an override for.
- Click Moderate This Quiz.
- Check all the students who need an extension and then click Change Extensions for (X) Selected Students at the bottom. If you wish to grant an extension to a single student, click the pencil icon to the right of the specific student.
- Type the extra attempts and/or time (in minutes) for the student(s) and click Save.
- The extension settings have been applied.
- If you are using the Available From-Until option, you should extend the accommodated student’s Available Until time so they can submit their work accordingly. To learn how to edit the availability of a quiz for a specific student, follow the instructions here.
In New Quizzes, you may extend the time limit of a quiz to meet specific student needs. The specific accommodations entered for a student in New Quizzes will apply to all New Quizzes.
Follow these steps to extend the time limit in a New Quiz for specific students:
- Log in to Canvas and navigate to your course site.
- Create a new New Quiz or open up an existing New Quiz where you wish to modify the accommodation for specific student(s).
- Scroll down and click Build.
- In the top navigation bar, click Moderate.
- Click the pencil icon to the right of the specific student who needs an accommodation.
- Click the Time adjustments drop-down menu and select the type of accommodation needed for the student. We recommend using the time limit multiplier because it will use the same % adjustment for all subsequent new quizzes. For example, if a student receives 150% time, you would select Time limit multiplier and set it to 1.50 time. Complete any required information and click Save.
- Once you have finished building your New Quiz, click Return at the far right of the top navigation bar. The students’ accommodation settings will be applied now in all the course’s New Quizzes.
- The New Quiz will be saved as unpublished. To learn how to publish a New Quiz, click here.
- The Moderate this quiz option is available only in published Classic Quizzes. To prevent students from seeing the quiz before you grant the time extensions, you may edit the Available from date on the quiz. To learn how to edit the availability of a quiz, click here.
- You must edit student accommodations before publishing the New Quiz. Changes might not apply once the New Quiz has been published and students have accessed the task.
- To delete a student accommodation, go to Modifying the Time Limit of a Quiz to Accommodate Specific Student Needs. Follow the steps in New Quizzes and select None in step 6.
