Time limits for assignments and quizzes can be modified to accommodate specific student needs such as DSP students or students with special circumstances.
This article addresses how to assign accommodations for:
- Assignments
- Classic Quizzes
- New Quizzes
Follow these steps to modify the due dates and availability dates of Assignments for specific students:
- Log in to Canvas and navigate to your course site.
-
From the Modules tab or the Assignments tab, click on the name assignment. Then, click Assign To in the top right corner.
- In the right-side menu, you will see the due date and availability dates for everyone in the course. Click +Add to include differentiated due dates for specific student(s).
- In the new Assign to section:
- Start to type in the name of the student. When the full name appears, click the name. You may choose more than one student, as applicable.
- Set the extended time for the chosen student(s).
- Click Save.
- Repeat steps for each set of students with unique due dates and/or availability dates.
Classic quizzes are designated by an outline of a rocket icon, as shown in the image below:
Follow these steps to extend the time limit, number of attempts, and/or exam window in a Classic Quiz for specific students:
Note: the extensions granted to a student for one Classic Quiz will not be applied to future Classic Quizzes; you will have to add the extensions in every new Classic Quiz you create.
- Log in to Canvas and navigate to your course site.
- Open up the published Classic Quiz where you would like to grant an override for.
-
Click Moderate This Quiz.
- Note: The Moderate this quiz option is available only in published Classic Quizzes. If you don't see this option, be sure to publish the quiz. To prevent students from seeing the quiz before you grant the time extensions, you may edit the Available from date on the quiz through these steps here.
-
Check all the students who need an extension and then click Change Extensions for (X) Selected Students at the bottom. If you wish to grant an extension to a single student, click the pencil icon to the right of the specific student.
-
Type the extra attempts and/or time (in minutes) for the student(s) and click Save.
-
If your exam is set up with a short exam window (using the Available From-Until option) where a students accommodation will run past the Available Until time, you will need to extend the accommodated student’s Available Until time so they can utilize their extra time. If you do not, their exam will submit at the general Available Until time and they may not get their full extra time. To do this, open up the assignment and click Assign To in the top right corner.
- In the right-side menu, you will see the due date and availability dates for everyone in the course. Click +Add to include differentiated due dates for specific student(s).
-
In the new Assign to box, type the name of the student(s) that need(s) an extension and select a new due date and/or availability dates that provides them with enough time to finish the exam. The settings from everyone in the class will not override these latter ones.
-
Repeat steps 7 + 8 for each set of students with unique due dates and/or availability dates. When you are done, click Save.
New quizzes are designated by a filled-in rocket icon, as shown in the image below:
Follow these steps to extend the time limit, number of attempts, and/or exam window in a New Quiz for specific students:
Note: the specific accommodations entered for a student in New Quizzes will apply to all New Quizzes but if there is a short exam window, the availability dates may need to be individually adjusted for each quiz.
- Log in to Canvas and navigate to your course site.
- Open up an existing New Quiz where you wish to modify the accommodation for specific student(s).
-
Scroll down and click Build.
-
In the top navigation bar, click Moderate.
-
Click the pencil icon to the right of the specific student who needs an accommodation.
-
Click the Time adjustments drop-down menu and select the type of accommodation needed for the student. We recommend using the "Time limit multiplier" because it will use the same % adjustment for all subsequent new quizzes. For example, if a student receives 150% time, you would select Time limit multiplier and set it to 1.50 time. The student would receive 45 minutes on a 30 minute assessment and 90 minutes on a 60 minute assessment. Click Save.
-
Click Return at the far right of the top navigation bar. The students’ accommodation settings will be applied now in all the course’s New Quizzes.
-
If your exam is set up with a short exam window (using the Available From-Until option) where a students accommodation will run past the Available Until time, you will need to extend the accommodated student’s Available Until time so they can utilize their extra time. If you do not, their exam will submit at the general Available Until time and they may not get their full extra time.
To do this, open up the New quiz.
- Scroll down to Assign Access. You will see the availability dates for everyone in the course. Click +Assign To to include differentiated due dates for specific student(s).
-
In the new Assign to box, type the name of the student(s) that need(s) an extension and select a new due date and/or availability dates that provides them with enough time to finish the exam. (Note, you will want to leave the original "Everyone" due dates in the Assign to field as they are.).
- Repeat steps 9 + 10 for each set of students with unique due dates and/or availability dates.
-
Click Save.
