If you are looking for a collaborative whiteboard space where all participants can interact and annotate, you should turn to Jamboard. Jamboard is a Google application, part of the GSuite, that allows for collaborative “whiteboards.” Jamboard works like a Google Doc, in which you can have several users simultaneously editing a file in real-time. You can launch an audio-only Zoom meeting with your participants and share a Jamboard link with them. With the Zoom meeting running in the background, you and the participants will be able to talk amongst each other while editing the Jamboard session in real time.
Part I: Launch Zoom Meeting
- Launch your synchronous Zoom lecture as normal. Make sure the audio is working properly before you dive into your session. You may want to consider turning off your camera feed since participants will be primarily focusing on the Jamboard session. See below for instructions if you are recording the session.
Part II: Launch a Jamboard session
1) Log into your UCSB Google account.
2) Select the Google Apps grid icon and look for the Jamboard application
- You can also navigate to Jamboard directly through: https://jamboard.google.com/
3) Click the orange + icon at the bottom right-hand corner to start a new “Jam.” This will open a new jamboard file.
- Edits to your Jam will be saved automatically to your Google Drive.
- Changes made by you or you participants will be updated in real time.
For more information on how to use Jamboard, visit the Google Jamboard Help page.
Part III: Invite participants to your Jamboard
Share the link to the Jamboard doc with your students so that they can all view/edit the whiteboard along with you. Multiple users can simultaneously edit and view edits in a single document in real time.
1) Click "share" in the top right-hand corner of the Jamboard file.
2) To share a Jamboard, "invite specific people by providing their email address" or "generate a link" that can be distributed to several users.
- To share with specific people, select "Share with people and groups" and enter the user’s email address in the text box.
- Select the Settings Cog to change the level of access users will have for a Jam.
3) To share with multiple users at once, select the "get link." You will have to provide the generated link to your participants manually (for example, through: email, PeachMail, Nectir, or GauchoSpace).
- In the "get link" pop-up, you will have the option to select who you would like to share with, and their editing privileges.
Part IV: Record a Live Jam Session through Zoom
it may seem unnecessary to share your screen to via Zoom as all participants will be able to access the Jamboard directly on their own computers. If you plan to record your lecture, you will have to actively screen share your display in order to capture the Jamboard session in your recording.
1) When you initiate Screen Share, Zoom will automatically adjust the participants' display. Instruct your students to simply exit the Full-Screen view on Zoom and minimize the application.
2) Students can then pull up the Jamboard session on their web browser while audio continues to be transmitted in the background (with Zoom minimized).
Additional Tips: Running Jamboard on a Touchscreen Device
If you have a tablet (such as an iPad) available to you, download the Jamboard application to run a Jam session from your touch screen device. You could also run a Jam from your phone.
- Launch Jamboard and Zoom on your computer.
- Invite your students to the Jam session.
- Follow the steps listed above to record your Jamboard session using the Zoom desktop client. Zoom will also be used to transmit the audio between instructor and students in the background.
- Finally, launch Jamboard on your tablet/mobile device to join the active Jam session.
- You do not have to join your tablet device to the Zoom session. If you are running Zoom from your laptop, make sure you are near the device so the built-in microphone can pick you up.
