To provide extended timing and scheduling options for students who require DSP accommodation, instructors can either:
- Create individual overrides for specific students
- Create a group of students with DSP accommodation requirements. Then, set a group override.
- If you have sections or plan to use groups in other activities, please place your sections/other groups in their own grouping and apply them to those activities. This will help maintain privacy of DSP student accommodations should groups be used and/or displayed in other activities. This article will focus on steps to help set up these accommodations.
For small courses, it might make sense to apply accommodations to students individually. Here's how to provide extended timing, scheduling options, or additional attempts for individual students on an assignment or quiz:
- Log in to GauchoSpace, enter your course site, and Turn editing on.
- Enter the assignment or quiz in which you would like to grant the override for.
- In the assignment or quiz Administration block, click User Overrides.
- Click Add user override.
- Search for the student. Then, select the name of that user when it appears in the search results.
- Update the override settings to change the open and/or close date, adjust the time limit, and/or allow additional attempts.
- When finished, click Save. If you need to add additional attempts for multiple students, click Save and enter another override.
8. If you would like for students' attempts to build off their initial or previous attempt, after setting the override/s, go back to the quiz settings, under the Question behavior subsection, click See more. Change Each attempt builds on the last to "Yes", the click on Save and return to course.
For larger courses, it might make sense to create an accommodation group that contains the students and then apply a group override. Here's how to create an accommodation group:
- In the Administration block of your course site, click Users, then click Groups.
- Click Create Group.
- Enter a group name (for example, "1.5x Extended Time Accommodation").
- Click Save Changes.
- Repeat steps 3-5 until you have created all desired groups. For example, you may need to create another group for "2x Extended Time Accommodations".
Once you have created your Accommodation group(s), you will next want to add students to them. Here's how to add students to the accommodation group:
- In the Groups area, select the Accommodation group. Then, click Add/remove users.
- In the Potential members list on the right, you will see course participants (students, TAs and instructors). Select a name to highlight it. Click Add to include this student in the accommodation group.
-
- To select multiple users from the Potential Members list press the CTRL (PC) or the Command (Mac) button on your keyboard as you click each person's name.
- The Selected user's membership section will show any other groups the student is associated with (for example, section groups).
-
- Repeat steps 1-2 to add students to each accommodation group.
As a best practice, we recommend that you always configure a grouping containing the DSP group(s) in addition to any groupings for sections or group assignments. To create an accommodations grouping, follow these steps:
- In the Administration block of your course site, click Users, then click Groups.
- Click on the Groupings tab.
- Click Create Grouping.
- Name the grouping (e.g. "Accommodations Grouping").
- Click Save changes.
- Next you will need to add your accommodation groups (created in the previous section) to the grouping. Click the people icon on the right under edit.
- Highlight the accommodations group you want to add to the Accomodations grouping. Then, click Add.
- Once you are done adding all the groups to the groupings, click Back to Groupings.
Once you have created your groups and grouping, you will need to set a Group override. Here's how to set a group override:
- Log in to GauchoSpace, enter your course site, and Turn editing on.
- Enter the assignment or quiz in which you would like to grant the override for.
- In the assignment or quiz Administration block, click Group Overrides.
- Click Add Group override.
- Select an accommodation group.
- Update the override settings to change the open and/or close date, adjust the time limit, and/or allow additional attempts.
- When finished, click Save. If you need to add extended time for multiple groups, click Save and enter another override.
