Starting in Winter 2020, the Collapsed Sections Format will be the default format for all courses on Gauchospace. You can, of course, change the course format to Weekly Format, the previous default or any other course format.
Collapsed Sections is a great format to use if you have many course materials. The sections are organized either by week or topic. You can expand or collapse an individual week or topic, as well as expand or collapse all weeks or topics in an instant. As the course goes on, it saves you and your students time scrolling down to the desired week or topic!
Collapsed Section: The Default View
The default view of the Collapsed Section will look something like the one shown in the screenshot below. The General section will be displayed at the top at all times and is not collapsible. This is where you may want to put content that you would like the students to be able to access at all times (such as Instructor Announcements forum or the Course Syllabus). The section corresponding to the current week of the quarter will automatically be expanded to students when they view the course site. The remaining sections are collapsed and can be expanded when needed:
The screenshot below shows the section for "Week 2 : October 5- - October 11" in an expanded view:
You can close and open all section at once using the options given below:
Editing the Collapsed Section Format
To make further settings within the Collapsed Section format, navigate to the Administration Block on the righthand side panel and click on "Edit Settings."
On the new page, navigate to the tab titled "Course Format" and expand it.
Using Option "1," you can change the number of sections you want for the course. Option "2" will configure how hidden sections behave. Option "3" or "Structure" has a few choices: Week, Topic, Current Week First, and Current Topic First.
With the "Week" structure, the collapsible sections will be titled as weeks corresponding to the quarter you are in. For example, a Fall Quarter Course might look like this:
Similarly, "Current Week first" shows weeks in a reverse format where the most current week is at the top. All future weeks are not visible until the instructor clicks on "Turn Editing On" to display all weeks. Students will not see future weeks at all, they will only see the most current week at the top.
"Topic" and "Current Topic First" structures are similar to the "Week" and "Current Week First" structure except that section titles are organized by topics rather than weeks. See screenshot below:
Make sure to click on "Save and Display" at the bottom once you have made the changes to the settings.
