Instructors can change the setting for "grade display type" to modify the format in which student grades appear in the gradebook for a specific grade item, a grade category, or the overall course total. There are several options for display types including "Real," which displays the grade in terms of points earned, "Percentage," and "Letter." While the default is "Real," many instructors will want to modify the grade for the course total to display a percentage grade, as this is typically more intuitive for both students and instructors. Here are the instructions for editing the grade display type for the course total:
- On the "Gradebook setup" page, click "Edit" on the under the "Actions" column in the row for the course total. This is the topmost row, which displays the course's title. Then click "Edit settings" in the menu that appears.
- On the next page, click "Show more" under the "Category total" heading to expand that menu.
- Scroll down to the setting for "Grade display type" and select the desired format from the drop-down menu. Some options combine different formats. For example, "Percentage (Letter)" displays both a percentage and a letter grade in the style indicated (e.g. "95% (A)").
- Click "Save changes" at the bottom of the page.
This same procedure can be used to change the display type for any grade item or category total.
