Sensus Access is a tool integrated into Canvas that converts course content into different formats. The integration allows students to convert Canvas pages and files into more accessible versions with varying output options. Depending on the original file type Sensus Access can convert files into file types such as .doc, docx, Rich Text Format, Tagged PDF, CSV, HTML, and Plain Text formats. Files can also be turned into MP3 and Braille formats.
The Sensus Access icon will appear on the Modules area of the course for each piece of content found within a Module, as well as on individual Pages within a course.
Student Use
When students click on the Sensus Access icon for the first time they will be prompted to authorize their Canvas account to use the integration.
Once authorized a pop-up will appear to select whether they want to convert the entire content selected or pieces within the content, often images.
The conversion type can then be selected (depending on the original file type) for either Accessibility conversion, MP3, E-book, or Braille.
Then the target format for the conversion to be output in can be selected, the options available will be dependent on the original file format.
The converted file/s will then be downloaded.
Instructors: Disabling Sensus Access
We don't recommend disabling Sensus Access in academic courses as this tool is designed to make course materials more accessible to students. If you would prefer to disable the tool in your course and prevent students from using it you can disable it by going to your Canvas course "Settings" and then click on the link on the right side to disable it, then click "Update Course Details" at the bottom of the page.
