The Redirect Tool allows you to add a custom link to your course's left navigation menu. This can be useful if you have an externaL URL that you want students to reference frequently throughout the quarter.
Note: You may use the Redirect Tool to link to a Canvas URL but students must have access to the resource you are pointing them to. (Linking a Canvas URL using the Redirect Tool does not automatically give students access to the material.) You will also need to manually update the Redirect tool URL in future Canvas course imports.
Here's how to add the Redirect Tool to your Canvas course:
1. Log in to Canvas and navigate to your course site.
2. Click Settings in the left-hand navigation. Then, select the Apps tab.
3. Click on the arrow icon.
4. Click +Add App.
5. In the pop-up box that appears:
- Enter Name for the link - this is what will appear in the course navigation menu.
- Enter URL redirect - be sure to include the "https://" prefix.
- Check box for Force open in new tab (For External Links Only) - this ensures access; some URLs will block loading in a Canvas iFrame.
- Check box for Show in Course Navigation – this puts your link on your course navigation menu.
6. Click Add App.
7. Reload your browser. The link will now appear in your course navigation menu at the bottom. You can rearrange the order of your course navigation menu through these steps here: How do I manage Course Navigation links?
