Best Practice Scenarios
The four scenarios below represent some best practices for using Assignments in GauchoSpace. For each scenario, start by Creating a Basic Assignment. The scenarios will provide suggestions grounded in best practices for selecting a submission type. Visit the Assignment Reference Guide for more details on the other settings.
The course includes a term paper, extended project, or written report.
- Log in to GauchoSpace and enter your course site. Click Turn editing on.
- Select the week/section block in which you would like the activity and click Add an activity or resource and select Assignment.
- Submission types: check File Submission box. Keep Maximum number of uploaded files at 1.
- Submission settings: list ".pdf" and any other acceptable filetypes for submission under "Accepted file types." You may want to limit submissions to PDF files, as this is the format that is compatible with GauchoSpace's grading interface.
- Configure the other assignment settings.
- Click Save and return to course.
- When ready to grade, use the assignment grading interface to view student assignments and grade in GauchoSpace.
An instructor can set up an assignment that enables a group of students to submit a single assignment for the entire group. If you need to create groups, visit Creating Groups and Groupings.
- Log in to GauchoSpace and enter your course site. Click Turn editing on.
- Select the week/section block in which you would like the activity and click Add a Resource or an Activity and select Assignment.
- Under Group submission settings, set Students submit in groups to Yes. Set Require all group members submit to No.
- Configure the other assignment settings, such as the grade, due date, and submission type.
- Click Save and return to course.
When a student submits the assignment, it will be automatically be submitted for each of the students in that group; when an instructor or TA provides a grade and feedback for any of the students in the group, it will be assigned to each of them.
Students are asked to complete a response to the readings prior to each class session. Rather than participate in an online discussion forum, students must submit written responses of about 1-3 pages (or less).
- Log in to GauchoSpace and enter your course site. Click Turn editing on.
- Select the week/section block in which you would like the activity and click Add an activity or resource and select Assignment.
- Submission types: check Online Text box. Uncheck File Submission
box. - Configure the other assignment settings.
- Click Save and return to course.
Students are asked to submit a final course portfolio that contains multiple items from the quarter. These items might include scanned images (saved, for example, as .jpg or .pdf), typed papers, and even audio recordings or short videos.
- Log in to GauchoSpace and enter your course site. Click Turn editing on.
- Select the week/section block in which you would like the activity and click Add an activity or resource and select Assignment.
- General: Include a detailed description of the types of files that will be allowed, if necessary give details on order of files and format for file names.
- Submission types: check File Submission box. Check Submission Comments to allow students to write graders comments about the submissions. Change Maximum number of uploaded files to whatever number is appropriate for the number of files needed to complete the assignment.
- Configure the other assignment settings.
- Click Save and return to course.
- When ready to grade, download all file submissions and view on your computer.
Students are asked to complete an assignment but required to limit their words to a specific number.
- Log in to GauchoSpace and enter your course site. Click Turn editing on.
- Select the week/section block in which you would like the activity and click Add an activity or resource and select Assignment.
- Submission types: check Online Text box. Uncheck File Submission
box. For Word limit, check Enable and then enter the number of words allowed per submission. - Configure the other assignment settings.
- Click Save and return to course.
To allow extension or different deadlines for a single assignment:

In the activity administration block, instructors may allow an extension or additional attempts for individual students by completing the following steps:
- Log in to GauchoSpace and enter your course site.
- Click Turn editing on.
- Enter the activity in which you would like to grant an extension or different due date.
- In the Administration block, click User Overrides or Group Overrides. If your course has sections, sections are referred to as Groups in GauchoSpace.
- Click Add user override (or Group override).
- Search for the user or group that needs extended time, then highlight the name of that user or group when it appears in the dropdown.
- Adjust the quiz settings as needed for this student. You can change the open or close date/time, or the amount of time allowed on the quiz.
- When finished, click Save. If you need to add extended time for multiple students, click Save and enter another override.
