Best Practices: Course Formats - Options for Your Site Layout

A course format is the layout of your course. You can select the course format by going to the Administration block -> Course Administration -> Edit Settings. Scroll down to the “Course format” section.

There are four different options to determine the layout of your course.

The default option is the Weekly format, and the primary formats are the standard weekly or the Topics format.

Weekly Format

The default Weekly format displays your course week by week with a distinct start and end date.

Usually the start date will be the first date of the quarter, but you can change the start date of your course site if needed: Administration block -> Edit Settings -> General -> Course start date.

You can also change the number of weeks displayed by going to the Administration block -> Edit Settings -> Course format -> Number of sections.

Weekly format highlights the current week of your course. You can add content to each week such as forums, quizzes, and assignments for each week.

Tip: If you want all your students to work on the same materials at the same time, this is a good format to choose.

Topics Format

The Topics format displays your course by topic, where you can provide titles for each topic.

Similar to the weekly topic, you can add content to each week such as forums, quizzes, and assignments for each topic. You do not have to specify start dates on this course. This format allows you to highlight a topic section manually, by turning editing on and clicking the "lightbulb" icon on the top-right side of the section.

  • Tip #1: This Topics format is good to use if your course is objective based and each objective may take different amounts of time to complete.
  • Tip #2: This format may work well if you are teaching the same course multiple times, including some sessions in the summer. You can simply import your previous course materials without having to re-arrange content to adjust to the course length.

Oneweek Format

The Oneweek format shows each week as a tab as seen below:

This format highlights the current week with a green dot.

You can change the number of weeks by going to the Administration Block -> -> Course Administration -> Edit Settings. Scroll down to the “Course format” section. You can indicate how many sections you want under “Number of Sections.” You also have the option to display “Topic 0” or the General Section, at all times. Click on “Save changes” at the bottom of the page when you are done making changes.

  • Tip #1: This format is useful for instructors who have a lot of material and want to display their course site one section at a time, but want students to track the progress of the course on a weekly schedule.

Onetopic Format

The Onetopic format shows each topic as a tab as seen below:

You can change the number of topics by going to the Administration Block -> -> Course Administration -> Edit Settings. Scroll down to the “Course format” section. You can indicate how many sections you want under “Number of Sections.” You also have the option to display “Topic 0” or the General Section, at all times Click on “Save changes” at the bottom of the page when you are done making changes.

  • Tip #1: This format is useful for instructors who have a lot of material and want to display their course site one section at a time, but want to organize the content in a way that is different than the weekly method.
