Summary
GauchoSpace’s Quiz activity provides instructors a powerful tool for assessment online, offering a range of question types. Questions can be reused in multiple Quizzes, reordered to change a Quiz layout, and/or randomly selected to ensure that no two Quizzes are the same for students. Instructors can see performance reports of how many students have not understood particular questions, so instruction can be adjusted as necessary.

General
- Assignment Name: Required. What the students will see when selecting the quiz's link from your course's homepage and the name in the Gradebook.
- Description: A textbox to provide a short description and guidelines for a Quiz that students will be able to view before beginning the Quiz.
- Display description on course page: Select this if you want the full description (above) to also appear on your course page under the name of the assignment.
Timing
For setting options related to time/scheduling for a Quiz. Quizzes can be set to open and close at an interval specified by the instructor.
- Open the quiz and Close the quiz: These two options set the time/date when a Quiz becomes available for students to take, and when it is no longer available. The Enable check box must be checked to use either of these options.
- Time limit: Allows for a maximum number of minutes that a Quiz is available once a student begins a Quiz attempt. Check Enable to activate a time limit and specify a number of minutes that the Quiz attempt remains active. When this is used, a countdown timer will be shown in the quiz navigation block.
- When time expires: This sets what happens when a student fails to submit their quiz attempt before the time expires. Options are: Open attempts are submitted automatically (This is the default), There is a grace period when open attempts can be submitted, but no more questions answered and Attempts must be submitted before time expires, or they are not counted.
- Submission grace period: Only used when There is a grace period when open attempts can be submitted is selected above. Check the box and specify a period of time to allow extra time for a submission.

Grade
The actual scores for the quiz questions are determined when setting up the quiz and adding questions.
- Grade Category: This will connect your quiz to a category in the Gradebook. You will need to create a category through Gradebook Setup. You can also add a quiz to a category within the Gradebook.
- Attempts allowed: This option specifies the number of times a student can take a Quiz. The default is 1. Change to a different number or Unlimited if you want your students to be able to retake a quiz.
- Grading method: When attempts allowed is set to more than 1, you can decided what method is used to determine the final quiz grade. Choices are: highest grade of all attempts, average (mean) grade of all attempts, first attempts (all other attempts are ignored) and last attempt (all other attempts are ignored).
Layout
- New page: This will determine how many questions are put on each page. The default is 12 questions per page. This can also be changed manually when editing the quiz and adding questions. After adding questions, the Repaginate now check-box will appear.
Under Show more...
- Navigation method: Choices are Free or Sequential, if set to Sequential students can only move forward in the quiz.
Note: If you would like to shuffle the order of the questions, this is done on the Edit Quiz screen once you have adjusted all of the settings on the Edit Settings page. If you turn this on, then every time the quiz is attempted, the order of the questions in this section will be shuffled into a different random order. This can make it harder for students to share answers, but it also makes it harder for students discuss a particular question with you.
Question behavior
- Shuffle within questions: The option randomizes individual response items within each question. It does not adjust the order of questions within the Quiz overall.
- How questions behave: This setting determines what kind of and when the student receives feedback (a grade) when taking a quiz. Options are: Adaptive mode, Adaptive mode (no penalties), Deferred feedback, Deferred feedback with CBM (Certainty-based marking), Immediate feedback, Immediate feedback with CBM, and Interactive with multiple tries. The default is Deferred feedback, the student must enter answers for the entire quiz before anything is graded or they get any feedback. For more information on the other options, visit Moodle.org on Question Behaviors.
Extra restrictions on attempts

-
- Require password: If a password is specified here, students will be required to supply the Quiz’s password before being allowed to attempt a Quiz. Checking the Unmask box will allow the instructor to see the text of the password in clear text. Note that you do not have to password-protect a Quiz.
- Require network address: The instructor can restrict access to a Quiz to particular subnets on a local area network (LAN) or Internet by specifying a comma-separated list of partial or full IP address numbers. This is particularly useful for proctored Quizzes where only certain students in a given location are given access to a Quiz. Full IP addresses (e.g., 192.168.0.1), partial addresses (e.g., 192.168), and ranges of IP (e.g., 192-168.0.1/10) can be specified to limit access.
- Browser security: When set to Full screen pop-up with some JavaScript security, this setting restricts some of the things that students can do with their browsers. Please note that these settings are not a guarantee of preventing cheating. When this setting is enabled, it has the following consequences for students taking the Quiz: If it is not already enabled, a student will be required to enable JavaScript on their web browser. The Quiz will appear in a new full-screen window. Some mouse and keyboard actions will be prevented (e.g., right-clicking). NOTE: Keep in mind that, even though this feature will open a non-navigatable browser, this will not prevent students from opening another Web browser or having access to other resources.
- Students cognisance of plagiarism policy: If you enable this option, students will not be able to start an attempt until they ticked a check-box confirming that they are aware of the policy on academic honesty.
These settings control what information students can see when reviewing a Quiz attempt or looking at a Quiz Report. The following items determine the time-frame when students will see various forms of feedback:
- Time-frames:
- During the attempt
- Immediately after the attempt: within two minutes after clicking Submit all and finish
- Later, while the quiz is still open: the time after two minutes but before the close date, if one exists, and
- After the quiz is closed: close date/time must be set in Timing. If no close/date time is set, these check-boxes are ignored.
- Controllable information: Each of these settings is listed under one of the above time-frames.
- The attempt: Allows students to review their responses to Quiz questions.
- Whether correct: Displays whether the students response to each question is correct or incorrect.
- Points (formerly Marks): Total points earned for the quiz.
- Specific feedback: The instructor is able to provide feedback tailored to each possible response for a question (e.g., "This answer is incorrect because…").
- General feedback: This setting allows the instructor to provide overall feedback for a question independent of student responses (e.g., "This question addressed material covered in…").
- Right answer: Shows the correct answer to each question, but can be problematic for some question types.
- Overall feedback: This information is provided to a student about their overall performance on a Quiz and is shown only after completing a Quiz attempt.
Some of these options are enabled by default. This screenshot depicts the default settings for quiz Review Options:
If these settings are left alone, students will have access to their attempt, their score (points) and all types of feedback both immediately after the attempt is over and later, should they return to review the quiz again. Instructors who want to withhold any of this information until after the quiz is closed must uncheck these boxes accordingly. Likewise, if instructors would like students to see whether each answer from their attempt was correct and/or what the correct answer was, these boxes must be checked.
Appearance
- Show the user's picture: Determines whether the student's name and profile image will be shown during quiz attempts and on the review screen. Default is No image.
- Decimal places in grade: This setting allows the instructor to select the number of digits to be displayed after a decimal point when showing a student score. This setting only affects the display of grades to students. It does not affect the internal calculations of and rounding of grades.
Under Show more...
- Decimal places in question grades: This setting allows the instructor to select the number of digits to be displayed after a decimal point when showing the grades for an individual question.
- Show blocks during quiz attempts: Default is No. If set to Yes, the blocks visible on the home page will be shown during the quiz attempt.
Overall feedback
This group of settings allows an instructor to specify the text of the overall feedback provided to a student after completing a Quiz attempt. The feedback given is dependent on the grade boundary and how the student scored.
- Grade boundary: The percentage or score that will prompt the following feedback. Must include "%" when entering the boundary.
- Feedback: What the student sees when they receive the score in the Grade boundary.
Grade boundary: | 100% | 90% | 70% |
---|---|---|---|
Feedback: | Excellent | Great Job. | Good work, but try harder. |
What the student sees:

Common module settings
- Visible: If the assignment is hidden, students will not see the assignment. This is the same as using the "Hide/Show" eye icon on your course page.
- ID Number: A way to identify assignment in the Gradebook, but can be left blank.
- Group mode: Select separate groups, allows non-group members to see work of other students, or visible groups, groups members can only see the work of their group, if you want to set as a restricted group assignment.
- Grouping: Select a grouping here to assign the activity to a specific grouping, which is a group of groups. You can use this setting to make a resource available to particular students.
- Available for group members only: Check this box if you want only those in the grouping to see the activity.
Restrict Access
You can limit access (ability to see) to an activity by adding a Date, Grade, User profile setting or Restriction set that must be met before a student can view the quiz in the course site. This will also change when the grade item is viewable in the Gradebook to students. See our page on making activities visible to select users.
Additional Attempts
You can grant a student an additional attempt or extended time on a quiz by modifying the quiz settings. See our page on granting another attempt or extended time.
Each time an assignment or a quiz is graded within the activity itself, the grade is recorded and available to students in the activity and in the Gradebook. If you need to change a grade for a student within an activity, we recommend entering the activity and changing the grade. When an Instructor does this, the grade is automatically updated in the Gradebook. See Grading a quiz to learn about reviewing quiz grades and seeing quiz results.
You can also override quiz grades in the Gradebook.
