The Bulk Feedback tool can be used to upload text feedback such as seat assignments or other information instructors want to provide students with that is not associated with an existing assignment in Canvas.
Before using the Bulk Feedback tool, we recommend you reach out to UCSB's Canvas support desk to ensure that that your intended use of the tool fits the functionality.
Steps to use the Bulk Feedback Tool
1. Create a new Canvas Assignment. We recommended that the assignment be set to 0 points and the option for "Do not count this assignment towards the final grade" be checked. For Submission Type, select "External Tool".
2. Under the "External Tool" selection, click Find on the right side.
3. In the pop-up window, select "Bulk Feedback LTI". Then, click Select in the bottom right.
4. A URL will auto-fill in the URL field. Check the box for "Load This Tool In A New Tab".
5. Scroll to the bottom and click Save. (We do not recommend publishing this assignment).
6. On the newly created assignment, click Load [Assignment Name] in a new window.
7. The Bulk Upload Tool will open. Enter a Title and optionally, enter a description. The title will be the name of the assignment and the description will be included as the assignment's instructions.
8. Select which identifier is used in the CSV file to be uploaded.
We recommend using a gradebook export to get student identifiers. In the Canvas gradebook export, "Canvas ID" is column B, "User ID" is column C, and "Login ID" is column D.
The expected file format is a spreadsheet with two columns and no headers:
- Identifier in Column A
- Feedback in Column B.
An example of an acceptable format is shown below:
9. Once you have your spreadsheet, click Choose File and select the created CSV file from your computer to upload. Then, click Continue.
10. Your upload will then run.
If there are any errors such as invalid entries/identifiers they will be noted when the upload finishes.
11. Once complete, a new assignment group labeled "Bulk Feedback" will be created and an assignment will appear with the name from Step 7. This assignment will hold the feedback that will be shown to students from the upload.
Student View
Students can access the uploaded feedback by going to "Grades" in the course. To the right of the assignment name corresponding to the upload title they will see a comment icon indicating they have new feedback. They can click on the icon to view the feedback.
A panel will open from the right side showing the feedback included for them from the upload.
