Adding quizzes to videos can make learning more engaging and help you assess how well students understand the material.
In Canvas, you've got two choices:
- Gauchocast videos with embedded quizzes
- Canvas Quizzes
The decision is pretty straightforward: think about whether you want to encourage active learning or need graded assessments.
You can embed quizzes in Gauchocast to create an exciting learning journey for your students. Yet, here's a crucial tip: use these only to foster student engagement and check comprehension, since there are known issues that do not make them a trustworthy tool for graded assignments. Gauchocast quizzes do not sync grades accurately with the Canvas Gradebook lacks some security features needed for graded assignments.
Alternatively, if your goal is to quiz students and assign grades for their performance, Canvas quizzes offer a more reliable solution. For shorter videos, you may consider creating stimulus questions in Canvas New Quizzes. For longer videos, you may integrate Canvas quizzes with your videos.
Create Stimulus Questions in Canvas New Quizzes
For shorter videos, you may choose to create a stimulus question in Canvas New Quizzes. In this case, you can chunk your video into smaller pieces and insert each piece as a stimulus by embedding the Gauchocast video using the Rich Content Editor. Students would watch the stimulus video and then respond to the question.
Integrate Canvas Quizzes With Your Videos
For longer videos, you may choose to prompt students to pause the recording at different parts and complete a Canvas quiz:
- Create your quizzes in Canvas. Group them in an assignment group.
- Record your video and signal students when to pause and what Canvas quiz needs to be completed.
- Optionally, have the videos and quizzes in the same place, as displayed in the image below:
- Create a page
- Embed the Gauchocast video on the page
- Insert a link to the quiz you wish students to complete
- Add the page to the student To-Do list.
- Add the page to the specific module
