Introduction
In addition the the standard Gradebook view, instructors can use the Individual Student View to view one student and one assignment at a time, or the Gradebook History to view the history of all grading changes in the Gradebook. Instructors can also view and print a student's grade report. The student grade report closely resembles how students will view their Grades, learn more about how students view and interact with the Gradebook in section 4.

The Gradebook Individual View allows instructors to sort the grades by section and assignment and view the grades from individual students and assignments.
Note: Late policies, posting policies, and some sorting and filtering options are not currently supported in Individual View.
To access the Gradebook Individual View, follow these steps:
- Log in to Canvas and navigate to your course site.
- Click Grades in the course navigation menu.
- Click the Gradebook menu in the Global Settings.
- Click Individual Gradebook...
- To the right of Select a section, filter by section by clicking the dropdown menu. Click the dropdown menu next to Sort assignments to filter the gradebook by:
- Due Date
- Assignment Group and Position.
- Alphabetically.
- Scroll down and check any settings you want to display in the Gradebook Individual View. Checking Treat Ungraded Assignments as 0 will give any ungraded assignment a 0 grade.
Note: The option Show Totals as Points on Student Grade Page is only available if you are using unweighted assignment groups in your course.
- If you wish to download the current grades in a CSV file, click Download Current Scores. To upload grades in a CSV file, click Upload Scores. If you wish to view the Gradebook's history of changes, click View Gradebook History.
- In the Content Selection section, select the student you wish to view from the drop-down menu below Select a student. If you wish to view other students, click Next student. To go back, click Previous student. Student names will be displayed according to your section preference in the Global Settings drop-down menu.
- Click the drop-down menu to the right of Select an assignment to select the student's assignment grade you wish to view. If you wish to view other assignments, click Next Assignment. To go back, click Previous Assignment.
- Scroll down to view the following information:

- The Grading section displays:
- The student's grade. To change the student's grade, you may do so in the Grade field.
- Excuse This Assignment for the Selected Student. Check to drop that grade from the student's final grade calculation. More information here.
- Submissions Details. Click to view the student's submission, their grade, and to add a comment.
- The Grading section displays:

- The Student Information displays:
- Student name.
- Secondary ID. The student's Net ID.
- Sections. The student's section.
- Grades. Displays the student's grades for each Assignment Group.
- The Student Information displays:

- Final Grade. The student's final grade.

Note: The student's grades when using the Gradebook Individual view will only display the selected assignment's grade and the Assignment Groups grades. To view all of the student's grades you can either do it in the Gradebook's standard view or in the Student's Grade Report.

- The Assignment Information displays:
- Name of the assignment.
- See this assignment in SpeedGrader. Click to open the assignment in the Speedgrader.
- Download all submissions. Click to download all the student submissions for this assignment.
- Submission types informs about the submission types enabled for the assignment (for example, Online text entry, Online URL, Files)
- Graded Submissions reports the number of submissions received.
- Displays the Points possible for the assignment, the Average Score, the High Score, and Low Score.
- Check the box to the left of Muted? to hide grades and feedback from students. Uncheck it to make the feedback and grades available to students.
- Message Students who. Click to message students who meet a specific criteria, for example, students who have not submitted yet or students who scored less/more than a certain grade. More information here.
- Set default grade. Click to enter a default grade to students who have not yet received a grade or to all students. More information here.
- Curve Grades. Click to curve the grades for the assignment. More information here.
- The Assignment Information displays:
- To return to the standard Gradebook view, click the top right Gradebook menu and select Gradebook...
In the Gradebook History you can view the history of all grading changes. You may filter the grading history by student, grader, artifact, and date. For quizzes, you may view the history of any regraded quiz.
To access the Gradebook History, follow these steps:
- Log in to Canvas and navigate to your course site.
- Click Grades in the course navigation menu.
- Click the Gradebook menu in the Global Settings.
- Click Gradebook History...
- The Gradebook History will list all the grade changes of the course. In a table, you will find:
- Date. Date of change.
- Student. Name of the student whose grade changed.
- Grader. Person who changed the grade.
- Artifact. Element where the grade changed (e.g. final grade, assignment, quiz)
- Before. Earlier grade.
- After. Grade after being changed.
- Current. Current grade for the assignment.
Note: Anonymous assignments will be indicated by a to the right of the assignment's date. The student name will also be hidden. Once the grades are posted, the icon will still be displayed but the student name will become visible.
- To locate specific grade changes, you may use the top filters. These will allow you to search grade changes by student, grader, artifact, start and/or end date. Click the boxes of the filter(s) you wish to use and type a few letters to begin the search or select a calendar date.
- Click Filter.
- To return to the standard Gradebook view, click the Gradebook History menu and select Gradebook...
In addition to the viewing options available in the Gradebook menu, you may also see a student's grade report by clicking the name of the student in the Gradebook. This report will detail the student's grades, their submission types and status, and any information that has been entered through the SpeedGrader or in the Gradebook, except for the instructor's notes. If needed, you may easily create PDFs versions of grade reports to print or share. Unlike the Gradebook Individual View option, the student report does not allow to modify grades.
Follow these steps to view a Student's grade report:
- Log in to Canvas and navigate to your course site.
- Click Grades in the course navigation menu.
- In the Student Name column of the Gradebook, click the name of a student to access their grade report.
- Click Grades in the student's performance summary that appeared to the right of the gradebook.
- The grade report displays the Global Settings at the top followed by the student's assignment and grade information. This is the closest viewing option to what students will see regarding their grades.
- The Global Settings offer the following options:
- Arrange by. Click the dropdown menu to organize the assignments by due date, assignment group, module, or name.
- Print Grades. Click to create a PDF printable version of the grade report.
- Show All Details. Click to view scoring details, such as the grade distribution for the assignment, the mean, high, low, median, upper quartile, and lower quartile scores.
- Calculate based only on graded assignments. This option is checked by default, displaying the student's current grades only based on the assignments that have received a grade.
Note: Once all the assignments have been graded, it is recommended to uncheck "Calculate based only on graded assignments" to view a closed indication of the student's final grade.
- The grade report displays the following information and options:
- Assignment name & assignment group. Click the assignment name to access the student's submission in the Speedgrader.
- Due date. When available, information about the due date will be displayed.
- Complete/Incomplete scores.
designates a complete score and
, an incomplete score.
Click to view the student's scoring details for that assignment, such as the grade distribution, the mean, high, low, median, upper quartile, and lower quartile scores.
Designates the type of submission turned in by the student. The assignment type icons will only display for ungraded assignments. Once the assignments have been graded, its score will be displayed (as in G).
Indicates that the assignment score is hidden to the student.
- Assignment score. The assignment's score will display based on its grade display settings. For instance, if you set the assignment to display grade as percentages, in the grade report the assignment's score will be displayed in percentages.
Indicates that there is a rubric attached to the assignment score.
Indicates the presence of comments.
- Late and Missing labels indicate that those assignments have been submitted late or that they are missing. More information about submission status here.
- EX indicates excused assignments.
- The Assignment Groups and their respective grades follow the list of individual assignments.
- The Total Grade is indicated at the bottom of the list.

Currently, the closest viewing option for instructors to view how students will see of their grades is the Grade Report. This section explains what students can and can't view of the gradebook when the section Grades is enabled in the Course Navigation Menu. To view course grades, students should click Grades in the Course Navigation Menu. A number to the right of Grades in the Course Navigation Menu will indicate that there are new grades to review.
The Grades page will display the Global Settings at the top and below a table with information about the Assignment status and available grades.
Note: Student notes that were entered in the instructor's gradebook will not be visible to the students.
In the Global Settings, the student can choose what course's grades to view, can arrange the grades by due date, assignment group, module, or name. They can also generate a PDF version of the page, view their Total grade with or without considering all the assignments, and manage the "What-if" option (more information here). When the grade distribution scoring details are enabled, students will also have access to a the summary statistics of the class grades for each assignment.
Note: The grade distribution graph displays for students after five or more students submit the assignment and remains visible for instructors after hiding the graph from students. To learn how to hide the grade distribution graphs from students, click here.
The table underneath the global settings displays a list of all the graded assignments, their due date, any update on the status of the assignment, and the score (when available). It will use different icons to represent information about the submissions (more information about the icons and their meanings here) It will also show when they submitted an assignment late, when there is a missing submission or when they have been excused from an assignment. Underneath the list of assignments, the student will find the Assignment groups scores and, at the bottom of the table, the Total score.
