Canvas currently supports two different quiz engines:
- Classic Quizzes -
- Designated by an outline of a rocket icon
- Original Quiz Engine that is native to Canvas
- Questions can be organized into Question Banks
- New Quizzes -
- Designated by a filled-in rocket icon
- Integrates with Canvas through an LTI
- Questions can be organized into Item Banks
Each quiz engine has different functionalities and features. This article highlights the differences between the two to help you consider when you might chose to use one quiz engine over the other. A detailed comparison chart between the two can be found here: Classic Quizzes v. New Quizzes: Feature Comparison
Use Classic Quizzes if you want to..
- Use question banks that you imported from a GauchoSpace backup (Currently, Classic Quizzes can be migrated to New Quizzes but there is no bulk migration of question banks to item banks).
- Administer Surveys (graded or ungraded)
- Add Text (with no associated questions/answers) as a section in the quiz
- Bulk download student submissions
- Export Quiz Statistics or Student Results as a CSV file for offline review

Use New Quizzes if you want to..
- Use Hotspot, Ordering, or Categorization question types
- Create Stimulus content (a piece of content such as a reading or image with associated questions)
- Shuffle questions in the quiz so that each student receives the quiz questions in a different order
- Apply an accommodation for a student (such as 150% time) that applies to all New quizzes in the course, rather than each quiz individually
- Have the total quiz points be different than the sum of the question points (for example, a total quiz worth 10 points but 17 questions each worth 1 point)
- Use a "Build on Last Attempt" setting.
- Print the quiz or the answer key.
- Enforce a waiting period between quiz attempts
